Having health insurance can open the door to even more resources and support for your whole family. If you're not sure where to start, you're not alone — and we're here to help point you in the right direction.
Your Child May Already Qualify for Free or Low-Cost Coverage
In California, most children qualify for free or low-cost health coverage through Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program. Here's what you should know:
- Medi-Cal covers children in families with a wide range of income levels. Even if you think you earn too much, your child may still qualify.
- Immigration status does not affect your child's eligibility. All children under 26 in California can qualify for full-scope Medi-Cal, regardless of immigration status.
- Coverage is comprehensive. Medi-Cal includes doctor visits, dental care, vision, mental health services, prescriptions, and more.
- You can apply any time, year-round. There is no limited enrollment period for Medi-Cal.
How to Apply
Getting started is simple. You can apply for Medi-Cal through any of these options:
1. Online: Visit Covered California or BenefitsCal to submit an application.
2. By phone: Call Covered California at 1-800-300-1506 (available in English, Spanish, and other languages).
3. In person: Visit your local county social services office. Find yours at cdss.ca.gov.
4. With free help: A certified enrollment counselor can walk you through the process at no charge. Find one near you at coveredca.com/find-help.
What You'll Need to Apply
To make the process as smooth as possible, have the following ready:
- Social Security numbers (if available — not required for all applicants)
- Proof of income (pay stubs, tax return, or a written statement)
- Date of birth for each family member
- Current address
Navigating health insurance can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to figure it out alone. Hazel Health is proud to partner with your school district to make sure your child gets the care they need and deserve — and to connect your family with resources that can help beyond the school day.
