Q: What brought you to Hazel?

A: I found Hazel because I was moving to Texas, and my position at the time could not support remote work. My position at Hazel is very much the same as what I was doing previously, school-based therapy. At Hazel, I even work with some of the schools I previously worked with.

Hazel has been a fantastic transition. I get to continue the work I want to do in a virtual setting. It was a heaven-send to have the opportunity to continue to do what I was doing!

Q: What makes a career at Hazel unique?

A: The most unique thing about this position is the ability to meet students where they are at. I get to meet students in their homes or at school. I love that I can still work with students in Colorado while living in Texas.

Q: Would you recommend working for Hazel?

A: Absolutely. I have a few friends that are in the process of getting licensed. I’ve told them to contact me once they are ready for work!

Q: Have there been any moments that have stuck out to you during your time with Hazel?

A: Yes, there are so many! I would say that the biggest wasn’t a specific session but just in general. Hazel does an excellent job at recognizing their employees. Last December, we had a companywide summit where they recapped everything in the previous 6 months. There was a small awards ceremony where they recognized everyone in the company, and I remember thinking how amazing that was! It’s incredible that we have so many people with the same mission, and it was fun to see people recognized for different roles within the company.

On the importance of incorporating coping skills outside of therapy

"The best thing students can do at home is follow through with what they learn in therapy. If students are learning coping skills, they must be putting those skills into practice outside of therapy."

Q: Hazel works alongside school nurses and other school staff. What has been your experience working with school staff?

A: I have worked the most with initiators*. Whether that is a school counselor or even sometimes the front desk staff, I have had a great experience with all the school staff!

*Initiators are responsible for starting all Hazel Health visits in the school setting.

Q: Do you have any advice for someone wanting to pursue a career in healthcare?

A: I would say the biggest thing is that you really have to know this is what you want to do. You have to be prepared for it and willing to put in the work.

Q: Have you faced any challenges since joining the team at Hazel?

A: I would say yes and no. Whenever there has been any kind of challenge or obstacle, I have people I can reach out to, and they are always willing to help. My supervisor and team are very supportive when it comes to any kind of question or hesitancy I have.

Q: Studies estimate that somewhere between 21 and 61 percent of mental health practitioners experience burnout. What do you do to avoid burnout?

A: I try to stick to a consistent workout schedule. I get up, drop my daughter off at school and come back home to work out. This gets me up and ready for the day. I also prioritize rest on my days off.

Q: What are some of your favorite therapy strategies?

A: I like playing games with all ages. One of my favorites is Scattergories! It can be very therapeutic because it brings out a lot of emotion. Some games can be a bit more challenging, and I use those to demonstrate how I can help them work through challenges and struggles.

Q: What are some of the best mental health practices students and families can implement?

A: The best thing students can do at home is follow through with what they learn in therapy. If students are learning coping skills, they must be putting those skills into practice outside of therapy. It’s also important that they are open and realistic with me about what they feel they are capable of practicing on their own. Being able to follow through is the biggest thing.
